Angeles City is known as the Entertainment Center of Central Luzon. Over the last forty years, it has grown to become a preferred location for retired Ex pats living in South East Asia. The abundance of good quality restaurants, bars and entertainment venues has also made this city a tourist destination.
The Recent Past
There are many reasons why Angeles City has grown so quickly. Clark Air Base was once the largest US military base for the US air force outside of mainland America. In 1991, the American forces pulled out and in the same year Mount Pinatubo erupted and covered the area in millions of tons of volcanic ash and lava.
Many people thought that this would result in a period of decline for the city, however, Angeles and Clark have bounced back and are now seeing a remarkable period of growth. This is due to several factors but the main two are the introduction of the Clark Freeport Zone situated in the former Clark Air Base and the decision by the Philippines government to make Diosdado Macapagal International Airport the major hub for the increasing volume of international flights into and out of the Philippines. Terminal One is completed and the work on Terminal Two has already started.
The Future for Angeles City
What is the projected short term future for Angeles City? Due to the excellent level of education of the local workforce and the fact they Filipinos speak very good English, the number of BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) companies has increased almost exponentially over the past five years. it is expected that this trend will continue for the foreseeable future. Also the decision by certain electronics companies to locate major processing plants in Clark Freeport Zone has meant a sharp increase in the number of available jobs in the area. The more people that are employed in an economy, the greater the spending power of the average family. This is turn will lead to an increase in the number of families that can afford to purchase their homes.
The Long Term future
As the growth of the economy continues, there will be more companies both local and international the decide to relocate here. A new rail link from Manila to Angeles is planned and improved infrastructure has already been started. Better schools, hospitals, nurseries, roads, water and electricity supplies are planned or have already opened or been implemented. Better policing and a more transparent approach to local and central government will also help in the future development of the Philippines in general and this area in particular.
